Traditional wearhervanes feature designs with letters, N for north, S for south E for east and W for west and a pointer. The letters function like the points of the
compass, showing which direction the wind is coming from. Decorative weathervanes can fearure hundereds of different designs feturing roosters, arrows, horses and other motifs.
Decorative weathervanes are usually placed on the highest part of a building or structure for ornamentmental purposes. Weathervanes are also referred to as wind vanes or weathercocks.
Windsocks
A windsock is designed to show wind direction and relative wind speed, also referred to as a wind cone these devices are cone shaped cylinders made of fabric. Much more accurate than a weather vane, commercial grade windsocks are used at airports and many chemical plants. Decorative windsocks originated in Japan and China centuries ago. They have been considered by many a symbol of longevity and good luck.
