Tips For Growing Tomatoes
You would like to grow juicy sweet tasting tomatoes in your homes garden or backyard and don't have a clue on how to begin.
Here are a few tips to get you started in the right direction.
Contrary to most peoples conception, the tomatoe is actually a fruit and not a vegetable. I spent most of my life thinking that it was the latter.
When planting tomatoes from seeds, provide ample space between each planting. The seedlings if planted to close to each other will produce roots that
will choke each other and rob the plant of water and soil nutrients. The best way to start tomatoe plants from seeds is to use an empty egg carton.
Place one seed in each of the empty spaces in the carton along with potting soil. They will require plenty of direct sunlight, if this is not
possible, place them under ultra-violet or florescent lighting. Water them daily using a spray bottle to dampen the soil. When the plants begin to sprout move them
to a larger container and remember to give them plenty of space between each plant. When the plants are a couple of inches tall they are ready to
take thier place in your garden or outdoor planting area that you have choosen.
The area that choose to place your newly developing plants should provide them with plenty of sunlight and offer a slight breeze. The areas where a light breeze
is present will help your tomatoe plants develop strong and sturdy stems. They will grow better in an open area as opposed to being planted next to a structure.
Before planting cover the soil in the planting location with dark plastic for a couple of days. This will pre-heat and warm the soil giving your plants
ideal growing conditions for starting out. Place the plants deeply in the soil and water them daily. Do not over water them and do not let them go days without
watering.
When your plants start to grow remove the bottom leaves closest to the ground, this will help the plant produce more fruit. When the tomatoes start to develop use garden stakes to support the plants
stem. The tomatoes as they develop will become large and heavy and cause the plant to fall to the ground. You can use strips of cotton cloth to tie the
plants stem to the garden stake.
